"Trompe d'oeil" is a french term meaning fool the eye. It's used for the style of painting where the viewer's eye is fooled into thinking there is something there that isn't. In this case, a "window" illuminates an otherwise quite ordinary staircase. This particlar homeowner always wanted a window at the top of her staircase, but was unable to without major construction changes. This was an economic and beautiful alternative.
